Lucknow: In a significant step towards improving post-cancer care, the Department of Surgical Oncology at Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute has launched a free Lymphedema Clinic in collaboration with Astitva Foundation. The dedicated outpatient clinic (OPD), inaugurated by the institute’s Director, Prof. M.L.B. Bhatt, aims to provide specialized care for patients suffering from or at risk of developing lymphedema following cancer treatment.
Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in body tissues, resulting in swelling, pain, and reduced mobility. It is a common complication among breast cancer patients who have undergone surgery or radiation therapy.
On its inaugural day, July 8, the clinic registered and treated more than 30 breast cancer patients affected by lymphedema. As part of the initiative, Astitva Foundation distributed pressure stockings and breast prostheses free of cost to all registered patients, helping improve their comfort, mobility, and quality of life.

Prof. M.L.B. Bhatt said the dedicated clinic would play a crucial role in delivering world-class post-surgical care to cancer survivors. He noted that the initiative focuses not only on treatment but also on educating patients about early detection, prevention strategies, and effective management of lymphedema, thereby reducing the long-term impact of the condition.
The clinic is expected to serve as a comprehensive support centre by offering specialized consultations, patient counselling, and access to essential rehabilitation aids at no cost. Healthcare experts believe that timely intervention and patient awareness can significantly improve outcomes for those living with lymphedema.
The inauguration was attended by Dr. Seema Singh, Director of Astitva Foundation, Dr. Varun Vijay, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Pramod Gupta, Dean of the institute, and Surgical Oncology specialists Dr. Ankur Verma, Dr. Durgesh Kumar, and Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, who reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening supportive cancer care services in Uttar Pradesh.
